Exclusive Interview with Matt Stell

A upcoming country music artist, Matt Stell that is originally from Center Ridge, Arkansas, is one of the singer songwriters who is quickly rising in the country music scene in Nashville, Tennessee.

The artist recently had time to chat with me about several things including who some of his musical influences are and about some special moments you have in songwriting. He also talked about his latest single, Prayed For You, and what country music fans can expect on his new EP, Everywhere But On, coming out this week on May 24th.

Emily Ann Wells: Who are some of your musical influences?
Matt Stell: My influences range from 90s alternative like Alanis Morissette to Ricky Skaggs bluegrass to country music from every era. I love rock and rap as well. There’s not much I don’t listen to!

EAW: You’ve opened up for several different country acts. Which one gave you a good piece of advice or you learned the most from?
MS: One of my favorite singer-songwriters, James McMurtry, sat and talked with me for an hour after one of his shows. He talked to me about songs, relationships, stories from his childhood, and a lot of other things. I’ll never forget one of my heroes taking the time to hang out with me like that.

EAW: You just released your latest single, Prayed For You! What was it like releasing that song?
MS: It has been crazy to see the song strike a chord with people. It’s also crazy hearing it on the radio between songs by country greats. I still haven’t gotten used to it, haha.

EAW: You’re about to release a new EP! What can you tell us about it? Do you have a favorite song on it?
MS: I’m so excited to release this EP. I worked really hard on co-writing and co-producing the project. I’m really proud of the finished product and I can’t wait to share it with people. My favorite songs from the EP changes daily I think.

Matt Stell’s brand new EP, Everywhere But On, comes out this Friday, May 24th! Be sure to take a listen to the title track below on YouTube or click HERE to watch!

EAW: What is a song you have wrote that is special to you or that you relate to the most?
MS: You know, there are moments in all of the songs that stand out to me. Prayed For You is special because it kind of set everything in motion. There’s a line in Everywhere But On that says, “my mail’s still going to my momma’s house.” I’ve been on the road so much that this was 100% the case until very recently. Now it’s only 80% true, lol. But seriously there are moments like this that happen in each song that hit me in a special way.

EAW: Since you’re a singer songwriter, which side do you lean more towards, singer or songwriter? Why?
MS: It’s such a cop-out answer, but I really love doing both. One wouldn’t be as fun without getting to do the other I don’t think.

EAW: If you could do any one thing in your music career, what would you like it to be and why?
MS: Well, I got to play the Opry with most all of my family and friends there. Hard to top that one in my book. I’ve also played a sold out show in my hometown which was pretty special too.

There is unquestionably no doubt that this upcoming artist, Matt Stell is not only a talented singer but as a songwriter as well. Stell easily has some of the key things that can help take him a long way in the music industry. This is certainly just the beginning of a great journey for Matt Stell in his music career! A special Thank You to Matt Stell for taking the time out for this interview!
