Mega country star, Carrie Underwood, has been enjoying a good deal of radio success with her two most recent number one singles, Heartbeat and Church Bells. But fans are itching for the next girl-empowering, man-squashing, “get-back-at-your-cheating-husband” type of super-hit, for which Underwood has become known. And with the release of her latest single, Dirty Laundry, from her current album, Storyteller, fans won’t be disappointed.
Underwood’s first “get back at your ex” song was the insanely popular Before He Cheats (which, coincidentally, was released ten years ago – almost to the day of the release of Dirty Laundry). And after a string of other man-bashing, revenge hits like Blown Away, Two Black Cadillacs, Cowboy Casanova, and the above mentioned Church Bells, we all can add another one to that playlist.
The woman whom Underwood is portraying in Dirty Laundry discovers that her husband has been cheating through clues left on his “dirty laundry” (lipstick stains, the smell of cheap perfume, red wine stains, etc). So, to get back at him, she hangs all his “Dirty Laundry” out for the world to see, both literally, by hanging the laundry on the porch, and metaphorically, by telling all the neighbors what he’s done:
“Now I’ma have to hang you out to dry, dry, dry
Clothespin all your secrets to the line, line, line
Leave ’em blowing in the wind just say goodbye to you
All those midnights sneaking in
I’m late again, oh, I’m so sorry
All the Ajax in the world ain’t gonna clean your dirty laundry.”
“If the neighbors get to asking, I won’t cover nothin’ up
I’ll tell ’em every little detail, how you drug me through the mud
I’m gonna string up your old button-down and slide it on the porch
Just in case you get the nerve to come knockin’ on my door.”
Dirty Laundry is no doubt a catchy tune and a perfect end-of-summer jam. Underwood knows what her fans want and doesn’t fail to deliver. Check out the song here:
