Sam Palladio – Wake Me Up In Nashville

If you’re a fan of the CMT television show Nashville (aka: a “Nashie”), then you might have heard that some of the cast members also pursue careers as musicians when not working on the show. Sam Palladio, the actor who plays the role of Gunnar Scott, is one such cast member who has enjoyed success as a songwriter and singer in addition to the notoriety he has received as a result of the series, which is now in its 5th season.

About two years ago, I stumbled across a video on YouTube in which Palladio was performing and singing a song he wrote based on a story his grandfather told him. When his grandfather was a young man, he fell in love with a girl who lived in Nashville. But after he went off to war, he was unable to get back to the city and never saw her again. Wake Me Up In Nashville is a beautiful, tender love song, full of longing and cherished memories, and I immediately fell in love with it.

You can hear Sam himself, tell the story and sing the song in the video below, which was shot at the world famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. It’s also a 360 video, so be sure to look around the room as you’re watching…

In case you want to follow along with the lyrics, here they are as transcribed by me:

Boarding the train,
I don’t know if I will ever see her again,
But of one thing I am sure,
I’m headed off to war,
I may not come back again,

What’s the cost to win,
People say we’ll change the world,
But where do I fit in,
At least I can wave goodbye,
To the apple of my eye,

Oh this crazy, crazy world,

So don’t let me sleep,
I’ve got a promise to keep,
You will be on my mind,
Saying be strong in this fight,
Carrying me through these troubled times,
So wake me up in Nashville cause that’s where I want to be,
And I will meet you on the platform at 3:15,
And I will look into your eyes in the fading autumn light,
Wake me up in Nashville, let me hold you tonight

Do you understand
As I put that twenty dollars in your hand,
All the tasks that you must do,
It may mean little to you,
But it means everything to me,

My friends they may get lost,
But they are fighting for what they believe,
And if you are all I’ve got,
I’d put your picture in my pocket watch,
Capturing that smile is all I want to do for now,
I may be gone a while but I’ll make it back somehow,

So don’t let me sleep,
I’ve got a promise to keep,
You will be on my mind,
Saying be strong in this fight,
Carrying me through these troubled times,
So wake me up in Nashville cause that’s where I want to be,
And I will meet you on the platform at 3:15,
And I will look into your eyes in the fading autumn light,
Wake me up in Nashville, let me hold you tonight

I’m Pulling into Nashville
Cause that’s where I want to be
I got fifteen seconds until I see you and I hold you tenderly,
But he says sir you must wake, I’ve made a terrible mistake,
Not its 4am you, said on you I could depend,
From Pensacola on to journey’s end,

So wake me up in Nashville cause that’s where I want to be,
And I will meet you on the platform at 3:15,
And I will look into your eyes in the fading autumn light,
Wake me up in Nashville, let me hold you tonight
