It’s that time of year where we are all pulling out our favorite Christmas music to play during the holidays, and, Lexi Lauren is joining in on the Christmas spirit this season, as she just released her Christmas inspired EP, California Christmas.
The young upcoming country music artist, chatted with me recently about the new record and is thrilled to be sharing some holiday tunes with y’all to help spread the joy during the holiday season. Lauren wrote the original tune and title track to the Christmas themed EP, and also came up with a great concept for songs to record for the project.
Emily Ann Wells: What inspired you to want to make a Christmas EP?
Lexi Lauren: I came up with the concept for “California Christmas”, and was just going to release that song as a single… a couple days later, I got the idea of adding four different Christmas covers, and putting together a 5 song EP. It was a lot to do in such little time, but we got everything done and I’m so excited to share all these songs with the world!
EAW: What do you think of when you think of Christmas?
LL: Glistening lights, decorations all over the town, Christmas music on the radio, crowded stores, my family getting together… it’s one of my favorite holidays, for sure!
EAW: Recording a Christmas song from each decade is very interesting! How did you come up with that idea?
LL: “Blue Christmas” and “Last Christmas” are two of my favorite Christmas songs, and they were the first two songs I chose to record for this holiday EP. I realized that one was recorded in the 50s, and the other was recorded in the 80s – that’s when I decided to pick two other songs from the 60s and 70s, and everything just fell right into place!
EAW: You have several references to other songs in your title track on the project, California Christmas. What are a couple of the references that might be hard to catch on to?
LL: I snuck “light blue convertible” into the chorus, which is a line from “Santa Baby”, and “I’ll be fine and dandy”, from “Hard Candy Christmas” as well… I think those two are probably the hardest ones to catch on to! I had a lot of fun finding different references from other classic Christmas songs!
EAW: What do you want listeners to know when listening to your Christmas EP?
LL: The most important thing to me with this EP is that everyone feels my love for Christmas music, and that they feel all the holiday joy and magic!
This Christmas EP, California Christmas by Lexi Lauren is definitely a joyful delight to add to your Christmas music collection. The record has a certain sentimental feel with a unique touch, that creatively combines different styles of music from several generations and today’s sound.
